Calgary location only Sports Medicine Physician services are currently offered exclusively at our Calgary clinic. Clients from Edmonton and surrounding areas are welcome to book and attend in Calgary. Alternatively, ØRKA Edmonton’s physiotherapy team can complete an initial assessment and, when appropriate, facilitate referral into local Edmonton-based sports medicine pathways.
Consultations and physician-ordered imaging are covered by Alberta Health Services.
Required from an allied health professional with an active practitioner ID — unless referred into our acute clinics.
Foot & ankle, knee, hip & thigh, upper limb, spine & ribs.
Physician, physiotherapist and strength coach working from the same plan.
In professional sport, an integrated model means the physiotherapist, massage therapist, strength and conditioning specialist and team physician all work the same case — managing pain together and building training around the injury rather than pausing it.
At ØRKA we stop an injury from triggering the chain reaction that forces athletes to give up the sport they love. After your physiotherapy assessment, or on referral from another provider, you gain streamlined access to Sports Medicine and Physiatry consultations with Dr. Rehana Murani for the management of sport-related injury.
This pathway handles both acute and chronic presentations. A formal referral from a healthcare provider is required so cases can be triaged appropriately.
Dr. Murani leads ØRKA’s medical pathway, seeing referred athletes for diagnosis, investigation and medical management of sport injury — then feeding that plan straight back to the physiotherapy and performance team carrying out the rehab.

Acute knee presentations may be better served by the Acute Knee Clinic.
Our sports medicine physician may recommend one of several evidence-informed injection therapies to assist with pain reduction, inflammation control or tissue healing. These treatments are arranged offsite in collaboration with trusted medical partners.
Prolotherapy involves injecting a natural irritant — typically a dextrose solution — into injured ligaments, tendons or joints to stimulate the body’s healing response. It is commonly used to increase stability within the system.
PRP therapy uses your own blood, processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors, injected into injured tissue to promote regeneration and healing. It is often used for tendon injuries, arthritis and soft tissue conditions.
Cortisone injections can reduce inflammation and pain in acute or chronic joint issues. Viscosupplementation, often used for knee osteoarthritis, injects hyaluronic acid to reduce inflammation, improve synovial fluid health and improve joint mobility.
Please note
These procedures are not performed onsite at ØRKA Performance. Where appropriate, they are coordinated by our sports medicine physician and carried out at an external partner facility.
Referral form is linked at the top of this page.
If a case falls outside this scope, ØRKA’s physiotherapy team can still assess and direct you to the appropriate pathway.
All Sports Medicine and Physiatry (PM&R) consultations are covered by Alberta Health Services, as is any imaging or lab work the physician orders. There is no direct cost to the athlete for this part of the ØRKA medical and rehabilitation pathway.
As part of your plan, the physician may prescribe medication, bracing or other health products to aid pain modulation and recovery. Some of these are not covered by Alberta Health Care and are fee for service, though many are covered by extended health benefit plans such as Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife or Green Shield.
Send a referral, or start with a physiotherapy assessment and we will move you into the medical pathway when it is warranted.
