sPORTS MEDICINE & PHYSIATRY

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS MEDICINE & PHYSIATRY SERVICES FOR COMPLEX INJURIES

AN ATHLETE CENTERED,

INTEGRATED APPROACH IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR.

In professional sports, an integrated model involves collaboration among the physiotherapist, massage therapist, strength and conditioning specialist, and team physician to manage pain and tailor training around injuries.

At ORKA, we prevent your injury from triggering a negative chain reaction that might force you to give up the sports you love. After your physiotherapy assessment or upon referral, you gain streamlined access to Sports Medicine and Physiatry Consultations with Dr. Rehana Murani for the management of sport-related injuries. This pathway is for both acute and chronic injuries, requiring a formal referral from a healthcare provider for appropriate triage.

HOW DO WE MANAGE AN ACUTE INJURY AT ORKA PERFORMANCE?

REFERRAL RECEIVED

Your Referral will be triaged into one of the following pathways: Sports Medicine Consultation or Physiatry (PM&R) Consultation. You will be contacted for booking of your appointment date.

CONSULTATION

After assessment and diagnosis, you'll get prescriptions for diagnostics and interventions (e.g., X-Ray, MRI, injections). A summary letter with recommendations will be sent to the referring provider, and if referred by ORKA Rehabilitation Team, a meeting will discuss your care plan.

COMMUNICATION / RETURN TO SPORT

Your customized rehab plan will be shared with your healthcare team, ensuring everyone is on board for a safe return to sport. Performance testing in our Sports Science wing will confirm your readiness for optimal performance.

Injection-Based Therapies

Our sports medicine physician may recommend one of several evidence-informed injection therapies to assist with pain reduction, inflammation control, or tissue healing. These treatments are arranged offsite in collaboration with trusted medical partners.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy involves injecting a natural irritant—typically a dextrose solution—into injured ligaments, tendons, or joints to stimulate the body’s healing response. It’s commonly used for increasing stability within the system.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP therapy uses your own blood, processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors, and is injected into injured tissues to promote regeneration and healing. It’s often used for tendon injuries, arthritis, and soft tissue conditions.

Cortisone & Viscosupplementation

Cortisone injections can reduce inflammation and pain in acute or chronic joint issues. Viscosupplementation, often used for knee osteoarthritis, involves injecting hyaluronic acid to reduce inflammation, improve the health of the synovial fluid and improve joint mobility.

Please Note: These procedures are not performed onsite at ORKA Performance. If deemed appropriate, they will be coordinated by our sports medicine physician and carried out at an external partner facility.

No, all Sports Medicine Consultations and Physiatry (PM&R) Consultations are covered by Alberta Health Services as well as any imaging/labs that they order (x-ray, MSK Ultrasound, MRI, CT scan, Bone scan, blood work), so there are no direct costs to the athlete for this aspect of their ORKA Medical and/or Rehabilitation pathway.
