ORKA Pelvic Health Therapy, Restoring Function, rebuilding confidence
Pelvic health physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy dedicated to addressing concerns related to the pelvis and core. This area of care encompasses a variety of conditions and scenarios, including but not limited to:
Bladder and bowel dysfunction
Pregnancy-related discomfort
Safe exercise during pregnancy and birth preparation
Postpartum recovery (following both vaginal and C-section births)
Pelvic and sexual pain
Pelvic organ prolapse
Rehabilitation before and after abdominal or pelvic surgeries
Lower back pain
This type of physiotherapy plays a crucial role in improving pelvic function, reducing pain, and enhancing overall athletic performance by addressing pelvic symptoms.
A pelvic health assessment shares many similarities with a standard physiotherapy evaluation. It begins with a detailed discussion of your medical history, lifestyle, and support systems. Your physiotherapist may also assess your movement patterns while clothed and examine muscles and joints externally, depending on your specific concerns. Pelvic health physiotherapists undergo extensive additional training that enables them to conduct internal pelvic floor assessments and treatments when necessary. These assessments are always performed with your informed consent.
The pelvic floor muscles span from the pubic bone at the front to the tailbone at the back, also connecting to the sit bones and hips. The most effective way to evaluate these muscles—assessing their strength, flexibility, and sensitivity—is through an internal digital examination. This involves inserting a gloved finger into the vagina or rectum, depending on your anatomy and the concerns being addressed.”
At ORKA, we take a unique approach to pelvic health physiotherapy by breaking down the steps towards your activity goals. This means getting you off the table and seeing how you move outside of just doing kegels on the table.
We understand that there is a time and place for pelvic floor muscle training in isolation but we find success for our clients in a more dynamic, activity based approach to pelvic health that strives to find ways to immediately change your symptoms. You leave your session with tools to help facilitate the transition back into sport or fitness.
Our pelvic physiotherapists work with anyone from LGBTQIA+ individuals to Cis Gender Females and Males looking to access pelvic health care across their lifespan. This ranges from individuals in the early, mid or late stages of pregnancy/ postpartum wanting to continue in activity and sport safely, individuals post operative gender affirming surgery looking to manage pain or symptoms, to Individuals going through menopause looking for direction to address their genitourinary symptoms.
Rehab is a unique process that requires individual attention. Our pelvic health physiotherapists will manage your entire program through Teambuildr or Physiapp, our programming applications. You won’t just get a few exercises on a sheet of paper and you will be involved in the process of creating a plan that reflects and respects both your goals and current lifestyle.
Within our rehab membership model, you get unlimited access to our facility for the price of 1 physiotherapy session per week. These Rehab Gyms will let you work on managing your symptoms up to 5 days per week. What this gives us is incredible outcomes and getting you back to the activities you love and living a symptom free life, faster.
Accountability can be challenging especially when it comes to self care and pelvic rehab, this model allows for you to keep a routine and make change faster with more touch points with a physiotherapist.

FAQs
Unlike a medical pelvic exam, a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist does not use a speculum or perform PAP smears or prostate exams. The focus is on addressing your specific concerns while ensuring you feel comfortable throughout the process.
Many individuals seeking pelvic health physiotherapy have a history of trauma, negative experiences, or past discomfort related to the vulva, vagina, penis, testicles or rectum. While not everyone may feel comfortable sharing these experiences, your physiotherapist will always prioritize your comfort by proceeding slowly, maintaining open communication, and adjusting the approach based on your needs.
An internal exam provides the most detailed insight into your pelvic health, but it is always entirely optional.
It’s important to remember that any internal or external examination is based on your consent—whether at a physiotherapy clinic, a doctor’s office, a hospital, or even during childbirth. Informed consent means you are given clear information about the benefits, potential risks, and alternatives before making a decision that aligns with your comfort and preferences, without pressure or coercion. You also have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.
Throughout your assessment, your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist will maintain open communication with you to ensure that you feel safe, informed, and in control while working toward your personal health goals.
Absolutely! It is completely fine to have a pelvic health assessment while on your period. Since hormonal changes can affect vaginal tissues and symptoms, an evaluation during this time can provide valuable insights—especially if your concerns are linked to your menstrual cycle.
If an internal exam is part of your assessment, you will be asked to remove any menstrual products, such as a tampon or menstrual cup, beforehand and can replace them afterward. However, internal assessments are always optional and only performed with your consent. If you’re not comfortable with it during your period, we can focus on external assessments and revisit the internal exam another time if needed.
While much of pelvic health training and clinical experience has focused on cisgender women, your ORKA pelvic health physiotherapist is a dedicated ally of the LGBTQIA2+ community. The holistic, biopsychosocial approach they use applies to individuals of all genders; however, there are specific factors to consider for those undergoing gender affirmation therapy or surgery.
Our Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Justine, is available to answer any questions you may have about these services. If she is unable to fully address your concerns, she will gladly connect you with a trusted local practitioner who has additional expertise in this area.
Justine also sees males for conditions related to urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, post surgical management (ie. post operative radical prostatectomy or vasectomy etc), persisting low back pain or groin pain that has not resolved with traditional management.
